International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems

A Classification of Diseases is a system of categories to whom one asigns morbid entities following pre-stablished criteria. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (commonly known by the abbreviation ICD) is published by the World Health Organization. It is currently in its tenth edition, known as the ICD-10. It is was devised to standardize the collection and analysis of mortality statistics. It originally began as the Bertillon Classification (1893) and later became the ICD. This classification is produced by the World Health Organization, and revised periodically. The latest version is ICD-10. A related publication known as the ICD-CM (Clinical Modification), which provides for additional morbid detail. Annually updated, the latest version (2001) of ICD-CM is ICD-9-CM.
